Kinja'd!!!1 Kinja'd!!! 32

I did this once before, and it was good times, so I’m doing it again.

Kinja'd!!!

My garage looks like this. I live in San Diego, where I also have a CTS V-Sport, a Silverado 2500, and a ‘97 Tahoe. I have a home in Alaska, where I have a ‘95 Bronco and a ‘70 VW Bus. I have a home in Baja where I have an ‘87 K5 Blazer, a ‘91 Suburban 2500, and a pair of ‘84 Honda 3-wheelers. I have a trailer at the Colorado River where I have an old ass beat-to-shit Explorer that I hate. I do many car things. I autocross the M3, I track the Z06, I cruise around in the Porsche, I do Baja adventuring in the Tahoe, and I tow boats with the Silverado.

Kinja'd!!!

Did someone say ‘boats’? I have 6 of them. Next to cars, boats/fishing is my most expensive and time-consuming hobby. Pictured here is my Tahoe towing 3-times its capacity in the form of my favorite boat, my 1979 23’ Blackman Fish Machine. I have numerous other hobbies. I golf more than any human should. I own more guns than I care to admit to. I carry a 200 average in bowling, which takes more practice than I’d care to talk about. I travel, I shoot long-bows, I play baseball, I’m in to planes, I do survivalist camping stuff, I read, I make my own trolling feathers, I wood-work, and I looooove dogs!

Kinja'd!!!

Did someone mention dogs? I just adopted this ol’ boy yesterday. He’s a Yellow Lab mix, and the reason I get to sleep in the kitchen tonight. He got dealt a rough hand before he went to the shelter, so he has major separation anxiety, and he likes to pee indoors. That’s why he gets to stay in the kitchen where there’s no carpet. But it’s ok. He’ll figure it out, and I fuckin’ love him. I wasn’t planning on sleeping much anyway.

Did someone mention sleep? I do very little of it. I worked 4 insanely lucrative years as a lawyer (plus 2 in law school), but I retired last year in my early 30s because (among other reasons) the stress was too ridiculous, and I was tired all the time on account of my terrible insomnia. It was nothing new, I’ve pretty much been tired since middle school, but until recently, I’d never had the means to just cash the fuck out and sleep til 11 every day, so here we are. Now I just manage the rental properties I bought with lawyerin’ money and drink.

Kinja'd!!!

Did someone mention drinking? That’s about a quarter of my wine-cellar. I make my own beer, and I spend enough time in Mexico to consider myself a serious Tequila connoisseur (I’ve been brushing up tonight). I’m also in to Rum. I found the best one in the world while travelling in Guatemala, and haven’t really been inspired to search around much beyond the good shit.

Sorry for the long-ass auto-bio. This will probably be the first chapter of my memoirs, which will be titled: 911e46z06: Much Less Intersting than a Man of his Experiences Should be . Available this summer. Anyway, AMA.

Congrats on the dog, he looks really happy.

As for the AMA (it does say anything right in the title), can you get me a job? I’m 26, I have about 4 years worth of college classes, but no degree. I got a 1420 on my SAT and I’ve been tested as having as high as a 140 IQ. I can do pretty much anything, but I’ve dug myself into a pretty deep hole that’s proving challenging to climb out of.

PS- My brother is stationed at Naval Base San Diego and my parents are over there this weekend visiting him. Say hi if you see them.

Thanks man. The people at the shelter talked me out of the dog-meat-farm dog I mentioned earlier. Said I would be way over my head. So I got this guy instead. I’m stoked. He’s awesome.

Definitely not. When a small but influential firm invests a bunch of money to train you and stuff starting your second year in law school, then you retire at 31, you end up on every black list in town. Honestly, if your brother is a Navy guy, you probably have more pull in San Diego than I do.

I’ll look for slightly-older-looking-Starfoxes, but I’m pretty much confined to home for a week. My dog had Parvo like a week ago, so he’s not allowed to see other dogs for another week, and he freaks out if I leave. So my Netflix account is going to be getting a workout.

No worries, man. I’m just gonna finish up my degree once I get off of probation next month and actually have some money to pay for it. Bummer on the blacklist thing. Aren’t you gonna go insane without a day gig that early in your life? I know you mentioned maintaining the rental properties, but, come on, that can’t be all that engaging.

It’s not. It’s only been a little more than a year, but I’m already pretty bored. I’m thinking I may turn the fishing lure thing into a business. I could write off all my Mexico trips and assets, all my Alaska trips and assets, all my boat expenses, and every fishing trip I take. So just the write-offs would probably make it worth it. Realistically it would probably never turn a profit, but it would be something to do. If I get too bored I can always move to Florida or something and go lawyerin’ over there.

Get your ass over here, then. I’ve got a GPS full of good numbers, a 25’ Parker, and the mahi are going nuts right now.

Daaaaaamn. I love Parkers. I can’t leave though. We’re catching more Wahoo in San Diego right now than they are on East Cape.

We were slaying the Wahoo last spring. I’m expecting good things around March. The Kingfish are usually popping around the same time, and by god do I love me some smoked Kingfish.

Just grilled some lobsters out and made a whole mess of conch salad with some snails my dad brought back from the Bahamas last weekend.

I’ve got a tough call. I usually go down to Baja every November to crush wahoo, but the season we’re having on the West coast is nuts. It’s going to be too warm in South Baja, but I don’t know where they’re going to be. Could be anywhere from LA down to Punto Conejo.

Wahoo is my shit dude. I’ve caught Blue Marlin, grander Makos, 400 lb Halibut, whatever you got, but there’s no fight as fun as a Wahoo.

Can I borrow your Z06?

Okay, real question: what's your high score in bowling? I used to be a league bowler, taking time off it now because I'm doing an MBA program and working full time, but I carry a 200 average as well. My best is a 299.....*sigh*

Good question. Just kind of never happened. Really the only V12 cars I’d be willing to give up my own money and a spot in the garage for (not counting a Zonda) would be an XJS or an 850, but there are at least 3 other cars I’m buying before either of those.

I kind of do adventuring down there more than racing. My Tahoe is set up as an expedition-mobile. I have a little aluminum boat that goes on top, and I cruise around and hit remote little fishing spots.

I do want to eventually do the 1000 though. I’ll probably either wait til one of my trucks dies, then salvage the body and build it up, or just build a VW. We’ll see.

Fair trade. Nowadays with e31s, it just isn’t worth it unless you pay biggish money for a really cherry one. Unless you want to do an LS1 swap or something.

This is two days late, but thank you for reaffirming my decision to go to make law school a serious priority. I’ve just started prepping for the LSATs as a junior in college and I was having minor doubts.

As for questions, do you have a favorite breed of dog? I’m partial to pitbulls, but I’m probably too allergic to own one. We have a bearded collie/pit mix rescue now and she’s great, but I still dream of a female blue Staffordshire Terrier.

Go for it man. Lawyerin’ is a really tough industry to break into right now, but with a little luck, it can be done.

I like Labs. This new dog is the first I’ve had since I was a kid, and both have been Labs. They’re cool dogs. Always happy. Also, they tend to be good on boats, which is good, because I’m, on boats a lot.

That’s what I’ve heard. Thankfully I have a few people who have already asked me to send them my resume when I graduate (thank god for family friends). What kind of law did you practice, if you don’t mind my asking? I’ve been leaning towards family law. I have a friend who, as a 27 year old, has already done a lot of good for a few kids by advocating for them pro bono. Seems like something that’d be right up my alley.

Ahh, yeah. I love labs. My first dog was a massive chocolate lab. Easily over 100 lbs, but not fat. I could ride him like a horse when I was little. They’re definitely great dogs, and good with kids. We had a German Shepherd that was a great dog but not good great kids outside of the family, and a wolfdog that was just wasn’t all that great with people, other than my mom and me, which was a little worrisome.

I did civil litigation. Family law is pretty brutal dude. Most of the time nobody wins. Also, clients tend to be super irrational and emotional, which really makes your job tough. For me personally, it just didn’t pay enough to deal with the level of stress involved. Some people love it, but just know what you’re getting into before you choose that route.
